SIZING YOUR INSTAGRAM CONTENT IN 2025

Instagram has recently overhauled its iconic square grid layout, transitioning to a taller 3:4 aspect ratio for profile previews. With more videos and portrait photos being shared on the platform, they’ve made the shift to accommodate these most popular posts.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

Previously, Instagram’s profile grid showcased images in a 1:1 square format, with each thumbnail in your profile sized at 1080 x 1080 pixels.

The updated grid now displays content in a 3:4 ratio, with previews measuring approximately 1012.5 x 1350 pixels. This means that videos will show in your profile feed at a better ratio with less cropping.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

While the grid preview displays a 3:4 ratio, Instagram recommends that you post with a ratio of 4:5 (1080 x 1350 pixels). Make sure to keep all your major elements such as text in the middle of the graphic so that they are aligned with the 3:4 grid preview.

Reels and Stories can continue to be posted in the vertical 9:16 ratio, or 1080 x 1920px. Make sure to avoid putting text in the bottom and top of your graphics to avoid cropping.

WHAT’S BEST PRACTICE?

  • Center Important Elements: Design your graphics so that key subjects and text are within the central area of the image, ensuring they remain visible in both the 4:5 post and the 3:4 grid preview.
  • Utilise Vertical Space: Embrace the taller format by creating content that leverages vertical space effectively, making your posts more engaging and prominent in the feed.
  • Test Before Posting: Before finalising your posts, preview them to see how they’ll appear on your profile grid. This can help to identify and rectify any cropping issues.
